Reid Orchards: Open by Appointment Dec. 16 to June 14

We now have many freshly-harvested, cracked pecans for sale, both 'Kanza' pecans and selections from my husband Bill's pecan breeding program. All these pecans have large nuts, thin shells and great taste, and I give taste samples.

Pecans store well for 3-4 months in a fridge, and for over 6 years in a freezer. We sell cracked pecans in 4-pound bags, which are over 75% pecan kernels and under 25% shell fragments. Each bag has the equivalent of 6 pounds of in-shell pecans, and when you pick out the kernels, you get 3 pounds or more of nutmeats. Each bag costs $19.70 + sales tax.

We now have over 6000 pounds of harvested apples, mainly 'Enterprise' and 'Gold Rush', mostly stored in our larger cooler in our pecan building. I'll sort apples out of these bins all winter and spring, into 20-pound trays for sale. We'll have harvested 'Enterprise' apples for sale until about mid-June 2026, and 'Gold Rush' apples for sale until about mid-July 2026. We have only a few apples for sale now until after Christmas, because people keep buying them as soon as I sort them, but we'll have many apples for sale from January to July.

'Enterprise' apples are great for fresh eating, pies and cakes, and are my favorite variety for applesauce. 'Gold Rush' apples are my favorite apple variety for fresh eating from January until early August, as they get sweeter in cold storage, as starches convert into sugars. This is the only apple variety I know of that does this.

Harvested apples sell for $1.48 per pound + sales tax for #1 fruit with no damage. I sort and pack apples into bags in boxes that I weigh to 20 pounds, so if you get a 20-pound box of #1 apples you save $1.00. We also have some nice #2 fruit, with some surface scarring but no internal damage, that sells for just $1.18 per pound + sales tax, and often sells quickly.

Since we had such a large apple crop this year, our larger cooler in our pecan building will still be full of apples until June or July 2026. For the last 2 years we had smaller apple crops, and got all apples out of our larger cooler by mid-February, so we could put pecans in that larger cooler before the weather warmed. This year, we'll have to sell some 1800-pound super sacks of pecans to the pecan cracking plant in early Feb. We'll only keep a few bags of cracked pecans in refrigerators, so we'll likely sell out of pecans by early March 2026.

I've changed the end date that we'll have cracked pecans for sale, shown at left under Crop Sales Seasons, to reflect this. If you'll want to buy more pecans, come this month or in Jan. or early Feb. 2026.

We're open by appointment from Dec. 16 to June 14. That means to phone 620-597-2450 a day ahead & leave a message on our answering machine saying when you'll come.

We'll be closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 25 for Christmas, and closed Jan. 1 for New Year's Day. You can make an appointment for any other day, Monday to Sat.

I'll be gone on a trip from Dec. 17 to Dec. 24 this year, but Bill will stay home to sell pecans. You do need to call a day ahead so he can expect you, as he can't see or hear vehicles come in when he's cracking pecans in our pecan building.

As always, we take cash or checks for payment, but NO credit cards or debit cards, and no "apps". We don't use a smart phone, and have no phone line to the sales building. So please bring your checkbook or enough cash to cover the amount of fruit you want to buy. Thanks.
